Dr Raphaëla le Gouvello (DVM, PhD) has long been involved in the aquaculture field as a veterinarian and she is now working within IUCN’s Ecosystem-based Aquaculture Group of Experts, to explore and document the sustainability of aquaculture on a worldwide basis. She will be presenting some recent work on aquaculture and marine conservation conducted in Zanzibar and elsewhere.

She also works in integrated marine and coastal zone management and development, having completed her PhD on circular economy applied to a fishery-dependent social ecological system in 2019. She funded and is now the president of RespectOcean, a French NGO which aims to federate players in the ocean and coastal economy around good practices and innovations for marine and coastal ecosystem conservation. She is well known as a windsurfer, having set world records in three solo ocean crossings.
